Cambridge National Certificate in IT

This course is for KS4 students looking to combine their GCSEs with a vocational qualification in information communication technologies. 

The skills, knowledge and understanding students will develop through this qualification are very relevant to both work and further study. They will support students in a range of subject areas such as A Levels in Business or Geography or the Cambridge Technical in IT. The award can also support their progression into employment through Apprenticeships in areas such as Digital Marketing or Business Administrator. 

Good use of Information Technology is an essential part of any successful business. It enables creative and collaborative working, solving of problems and use of the best techniques and technologies to communicate meaningful information which meets customers’ needs.

Theoretical and practical work is designed to reflect current and future technology, whilst the practical work is flexible and based around the student’s IT skills and interests.  The Certificate in IT directly prepares students for advanced learning or entry-level IT careers.

Students will develop a full complement of transferable skills, standing them in good stead for structuring and monitoring their future projects, in work or continued study.

Assessment Unit R012 - Understanding tools, techniques, methods and processes for technological solutions is externally examined.

Assessment Unit R013 - Developing technological solutions is internally assessed and OCR-moderated. Work is produced by following an OCR-set assignment.


  1. Centre assessed practical unit 50%
  2. Examination 50%
Further Education and Career Opportunities:  

The Cambridge National Certificate in Information Technologies equips learners with the practical IT skills they need to progress to further qualifications or apprenticeships, junior roles in the IT industry or to Level 3 A Level or vocational qualifications. 

Virtually all employers and higher education courses now require demonstrable competency and skills in IT.  The Cambridge National Award in IT is the best method to demonstrate this.  This qualification provides a stepping stone to further study in Post 16 education or the study of other technology courses in colleges.  Specialist IT courses are available at virtually all universities and colleges.
